Beta for Umgeni

Post by rasmus » Mon Nov 25, 2019 11:38 am

Looking into visiting Howick/Umgeni Valley over Christmas. We have never been and will sort of be in the area :-)
Any particular place climbers like staying? We'd probably prefer camping, but open to other (cheapish) options. Don't mind roughing it, especially if there are less crowds... Is everything sold out by now?
As far as I gather from reading online, Umgeni is a good summer destination (shady walls etc). Is that your opinion too?

Hi there, Umgeni is the best for this time of year. May be warm but the rock dries out quickly after rain. Umgeni reserve itself has some accommodation options. While there are camping options nearby I'm not familiar with specifics. You can also investigate any airbnb options near Howick. You can get some good deals here.

If you haven't already, get in touch with WESSA (who manage the reserve) for info on availability, details here: http://wessa.org.za/umgeni-valley-nature-reserve/

I'd also consider Shongweni Dam - there is camping and tons of climbing both within the reserve itself and nearby (Krantzkloof, Winston Park, Monteseel, etc.).

The new Umgeni guidebook is full of all the information you need. City Rock and Roc n Rope have stock. You can also buy it at reception at Umgeni. Have a good trip
