Where are the climbing gyms in Jo'burg?
I started climbing around the middle of last year and used to go to Urban Crag, which was great since it is close to home. I remember quite a lot of people from the East Rand and Sandton used to go there. Since they closed in December, I haven't gone climbing at all. Where is the nearest gym to the East Rand?
I heard a rumour that the Mountain Club of SA was going to open a climbing centre in Midrand. Is this true? When will it open?

I have just relocated from Cape Town and looking to do some climbing... Have heard about this gym with the bad reputation can it be so bad if you look out for yourself as one does when climbing? -Where is it? and are there contact numbers websites etc?
There must be a large climbing community here in JHB, so why no gym? City Rock seems to be doing OK and I know of a couple of people that were introduced to climbing just through the gym and that is in \"Slaapstadt\"... So surely the guys here can put something together?

gerlened , I do not know of any gyms in that area, but you do have some really amasing friction climbing near by. Wellingtons Dome is probably no more than 20 min Mokopane (Potgietersrus).
We often head out from JHB to play on that granite for the weekend. Bare in mind though, winter is best, in summer you'll cook!

The climbing is really cool and has some awesome lines. There is plenty potential for bouldering too and when the day is done and if you are staying the night, you'll find old Jaap and his heated pool a hoot.
Enjoy!

Blouberg is where its at. Its about an hour's drive and 3hr walk from Polokwane. 400m wall with tons of routes. I believe Makapan's Gat is somewhere near there as well, which apparently has some awesome climbing. I think there might be access issues though. And Wolkberg isnt too far - the climbing isnt great but its an awesome spot

What's up with the survey?
How long has the survey been up? What's the feedback been like so far? Does it look like there will be a gym opening up in Kyalami?
ClimbZA, please could you do a follow-up article on this.

I have spoken to one of the people involved with the gym and they are still in a planning phase (building a gym is a rather large undertaking).
As soon as we hear anything we'll let you know

Hi Justin
Maybe I wasn't clear. I was not asking whether we were going to have another gym opening tomorrow or not. I was just referring to the fact that there is a link on the front page of ClimbZA to a survey - no other info is given.
You say that they are still in the planning phase. Are they still doing a feasibility study? If so, when will we know the results? If the feasibility study has yielded a positive outcome, when do they anticipate getting a venue, starting construction, openning doors?
There is so much info that ClimbZA needs to get. I wait in despirate anticipation to know more.

Hi All,
I made an enquiry into The Proposed Climbing Gym in Gauteng.
Below is the statement that I was given to post:
Cheers,
Justin

This particular gym will no longer be taking place. I’m sure someone else will get something off the ground at some point in the near future. We thank you all for filling out our survey and the encouragement we got from all of you.\"

Well that's really sad to hear. I'm sure a lot of people were eagerly awaiting a world class gym.

Urban Crag is thinking about re-opening. It will be a while off still, but I really hope he does!!
My climbing has gone waaay down since they closed. just don't have time to travel often!
