Topside

Postby Captain Haddock » Wed Sep 13, 2006 10:47 am

Hi,

a mate and myself plan to travel to CT from JHB next week. We plan to spend some time at Topside. Does anyone have an RD for the area? Is it worth spending a few days there or can you recommend any other crags/bouldering spots nearby?

Topside is awesome. It's probably, in terms of scope of problems and number of quality problems, second only to Rocklands in South Africa.

That said, the areas tend to be quite small and very dififcult to find, especially if you don't have a guide. The guide is out of print.

The other option is, of course, Rocklands. Rocklands is unbelievably good and 2.5 hours away from Cape Town. There are guides for Rocklands on bouldering.co.za and saclimb.co.za.

Other options in Cape Town:
(1) Redhill (Simonstown) - very good, and there are pretty accurate and up to date guides
(2) Deer Park and environs (above and below Table Mountain road) - not great, but home to some classic problems.
(3) The Classroom (Newlands forest) - access is a little iffy, but it's (in my opinion at least) the funnest single boulder in Cape Town. A few ultra-classic problems.

There are some guides on cutloose.ca.tf.

If you're here this weekend, you can tag along on our sunday mission to Topside.

Thanks, we'll be there next Thursday (in time for the eclipse!) so if you can handle a couple of freeloaders next weekend, I'll get hold of you.

Unfortunately, I'm in Rocklands with a couple of your Joburg compatriots from the 23rd for about a week.
