Which harness do you prefer???

Postby BWOlivier » Tue Apr 29, 2014 3:42 pm

So I've got a hard choice to make, Black Diamond Momentum SA or the Petzl Corax???
I've found both for around the same price and correct size. I'm only looking for a gym and sport climbing harness but don't know which to chose?? Any advice?? :?

I have the Black Diamond flight, similar to the momentum.
It's lightweight and comfy to hang around in, perfect for a typical sport climber/beginner.
The momentum does look a little more padded though.

Ya I've seen it, but I'm on a tight budget so would the flight be worth the extra money??

Petzl Corax or Momentum SA.

But dont take my word for it.

I have the petzl corax and use it for gym climbing and sport outdoor, very comfortable. have also hung around in it on a few problems without any issue (more often than I would like to admit).

No experience on the BD harness, so can't comment there.

I have used both and found the Momentum to be the more comfortable of the 2. These were older versions of these harnesses.

The price tag does make it a better looking harness. :thumleft:

If you wanna climb 9a get this one, only problem it is not available in SA same as the 9a route. :jocolor:

Wish somebody would import the worlds best outdoor gear, besides the fact that only a few could afford it at the current exchange rate.

The Corax has plastic gear loops moulded to keep it from hanging next to the harness. This makes clipping much easier. I'm not sure if they still come out that way.

The leg loops and waist belt is more comfortable because it's not just webbing with padding covering the webbing. The padding "is" the webbing. It makes a big difference.

Wear a whillans harness for a while, take some whippers and do some long multi pitch routes in it. After that any harness will be awesome!

... and the population growth will take a downward plunge?

My current choice? Black Diamond Ozone for sport climbing and Black Diamond Big Gun for Trad and other adventures (and loving both!) - The BD Aspect or Momentum would be my choice if I had to only have one.

They are all the same thing really. Get the one that fits the best and can easily take 10-15 quickdraws. I like BD, lots of my friends like Petzl, it comes down to body shape which is the best fit/most comfy
Happy climbing

About a year ago I did a harness review in SA Mountain magazine, maybe you can get hold of Tony and get a back issue?

I recall the most comfortable one was the Wild Country Summit. If I were to own only one harness, this would be it.

Cheers

Nick said it best: it comes down to body shape which is the best fit/most comfy. I strongly recommend sit-testing before purchasing.

I loved my Corax - used it for many (possibly too many?) years, until gear loops (the old plastic ones) started breaking and my friends refused to be belayed with the harness. I'd buy another in a flash.

Cormac likes his WC. Based on similar reviews, I bought a WC Synchro Ziplock - terrible harness for me, incredibly uncomfortable, sits in my cupboard gathering dust. Seems that WC cuts just don't fit my body.

Harnesses are like cars - preferences are subjective.
