Dassies Kasteel Crag
Dassies Kasteel Crag
Everytime I drive over Ou Kaapse Weg, I look up at Dassies Kasteel and wondered if there was any good climbing on the strip of rock just below the peak. So yesterday we took a walk up there and discovered some amazing lines. 90% of which are trad-able.
I am sure some of them must have been climbed before. Does anyone have any info this crag?

Re: Dassies Kasteel Crag
You are correct, people have climbed there before. I think the long walk-in has put many people off going there.
It does look good!
How long did it take you to walk there?

Thanks for resizing the pics.
The walk in takes about an hour but it is fairly flat.

Re: Dassies Kasteel Crag
The walk in isn't bad at all and there is actually a path up to the crag (although initially we didn't see it). The walk in is easier than "The hole", which we did the day before.
It looks good I am keen to head back there soon.

MAny eons ago I climbed on this crag. We mainly did the lines either side of the big open corner which you can see from below. pretty easy. enjoy. Leo
Re: Dassies Kasteel Crag aka Kleintuin Kop
After some correspondence with people in the know, I have discovered that the crag is also known as Kleintuin Kop. Both Jono Fisher and Richard Behne have climbed lines there, but I am unsure which ones. From the collective experience it seems to be a decent crag that is very trad-able and therefore shouldnt be considered for bolting.
Ill start a wiki page with a bit of info on the Crag and as we climb the lines, Ill add details to it.

Nice crag that gets discovered every few years. Some of the obvious lines have had quite a few first accents.
There is another thread on it somewhere here started by Mok (Justin?)
The line above the dude in the blue shirt was done by Hilton Davies. Up the corner, rail left, crux is the thin wall above the roof.
There are a few remaining beacons around. A peg on wall just to right of Ystervark cave.
Enjoy

Looks like fun, if you are interested in doing some new trad, also check out Ledges (the far left side of TM when looking from the cable station) did an excellent 15 and a fun 21/22 but there is more stuff that will go. There has been a fair amount of climbing there in the past so you may want to search through the old MCSA journals.
