It should also be reminded that as per a previous thread there is also a Water World rebuild this weekend. Yes, I agree that there are many climbers and few things to do, but it would seem that the Water World rebuild had first first dibs for people. Apparently there are only about 10 climbers in Cape Town.

Perhaps if you had chosen a date that allowed less conflict it would have helped your cause?

Hey all, if I remember correctly the Fischer chemical we use is rated to some 70 MPa (can anyone remeber from the course, but that's what I recall).
Anyway, I was doing a little research on this in relation to the compressive strength of some rocks.
So check out the PDF below if you're interested:
https://www.rocscience.com/hoek/corner/11_Rock_mass_properties.pdf <--- Page 6 for the good stuff :)

To put it in perspective, Silvermine is a sandstone which has been lightly metamorphosed so is somewhat quartzitic (the individual sand grains have been fused together under heat [+- 300 degrees C] and pressure, making the overall rock quite a lot stronger than your average sandstone)...Anyway, we can thus expect Silvermine rock to have a compressive strength likely upwards of 100 MPa according to the doc attached.

This is no biggie, things however would become more questionable were we using mechanical anchors in more poor quality rock....A true sandstone (Lainsburg and karoo) or more silty/shaley material where the mechanical anchor actually can crush the rock inside the hole and thus not hold properly.

I'm not sure what point I was trying to make here...just provide some information,...read it or not.

These tests to actually see what the rock strength are, are pretty simple to perform. Might be interesting to take a few larger boulders (15 - 20 cm) sometime from a bunch of different crags and have them tested...I'm sure I could find some geotechnical student at UCT or Stellies willing to help with this :)

Cheers,
Cuan

This is what you are currently climbing on when you clip bolts at Lower Silvermine....
So help us make sport climbing safe again.

Turtle I agree that we live in a consumer driven world and so we should make life as easy as possible for people, but do you think that competing for ways to improve that world is really the best solution? Sure it is democratic, but ultimately who looses?

I would agree that the Waterworld climber is not the Silvermine climber, but as I have had no positive replies from them I am forced to assume that they have either opted for the closer (more consumable) option, or that they don't care.

Ai Warren

Your assumption that ppl(all ppl) always choose the easiest way is a bit wrong, I feel.

Some have legit reasons to stay, like no money(eish), or in my case I'm running a 21k race on Sunday(my weight-loss-wannabeasuperstar program is finally beginning to work for me :thumright ). And I even get to do a little something(like a whole bunch of us did for Waterworld 2 or so years ago) for my beloved sport - once again thx for those who organized it! A super weekend is in the making here...whoop!!!

As for the reason why they dare not to communicate to you, I can only assume. Maybe they don't think its necessary to ask for permission, or, like in my case, some simply don't have time to always reply or email everyone.

Just be careful: I think we all are trying to gently attract ppl to helping, getting involved and getting rid of that old 'why-hasn't-SOMEONE-rebolted-this-or-that' mindset. Lets encourage help, ALL SORTS of help, from ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE wherever and whenever we can!

Whoop for this weekend, yo!

I know it's short notice and a week day but we are going to Silvermine lower crag tomorrow to continue the re-bolting.

So far it's just 2, maybe 3 of us, so if you have the day off or can get off work early any help would be much appreciated. We will be getting there around 1pm.

PM me if you are keen to come.

Chias!

Sup...You can finish Vlad the Impailer is Cormac thinks that's cool. Most of the holes are already drilled (I think the top anchors, second last and first bolts need to be finished drillinh.).
You should notice the bolts have moced and there is an extra one now added to reduce the risk of dangerous falls. Unfortunately I wont be able to join :(

I had to bail out last ARF due to an injury. Thursday and Friday however is Thanksgiving holidays for me (benefits of working with the yanks).

Is there still any work needed at Impaler or other climbs? Would be keen to go play and do some work there these two days. (22/23 Nov)...

Cormac?

Vlad is now done!
I gotta work during day. Contact Robert at CR, he sometimes will do day meets, else there is an ARF meet at "The Mine" on 1 Dec

Cheers
Cormac
