Climbing in Clarens area

Post by Liz » Mon Jun 25, 2012 8:28 am

A friend of mine stayed over at Mafube Mountain Retreat close to Fouriesburg and told me that the owners are keen to put up rock climbing routes (bolted). Unfortunately I have never been there and was wondering whether anyone knows about the place or will be travelling past there to check out the rock and maybe take some pictures. The owners are also worried about liability issues if someone gets hurt while climbing.

I dont live that close, but when driving through Clarens area I've seen some impressive looking rock. Definately worth a look!

Hi, I lived in Clarens for a year and we scouted around the local Mountains for some decent route potential

Unfortunately the Sand Stone is VERY brittle

Nuts and Hexes work alright but Camming Devices slip out because it's so "sandy"

We've gone Bouldering and pulled off flakes the size of dinner plates :o

I think this thread has already been discussed in the past

Dont bold in the clarens area, looks goood, deadly sandstone, very low grade, made from low temperature and pressure.
