Hey Gareth,
Just some food for thought,
I think if done well you would not pay much more putting the thing up youself. (eg you will not be paying a fee for an established name)
Then, rather than doing it in the North of Jhb, (with potential to start saturating the market)
rather tap into unexplored markets like the south, west or east of Johburg. (hmmm, isnt there someone already tapping into the east?)
That way the sport grows, and there is space for everyone.
?

There's only one climbing gym in Johannesburg - WonderWall.
And there is only one way to find out if they are for sale. Ask them.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
I agree that the North is not always the best place to put a new climbing gym but have looked around the West area and can't find a place.
So if anyone knows of a empty warehouse etc that will work please let me know.
Wonderwall is not big enough for the full concept I have but thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
The east is an untapped area and I know of plenty of guys wishing for a gym out there,
Maybe the new greenstone area will do well.
Keep us posted on your decision.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
Incidently, you are aware that contracts have been signed for a new, purpose built Wonderwall to be contructed? I agree that either North or East should be able to sustain a gym, however I hope its of the right calibre to host a regular crowd and competitions, rather than something simply bought as left overs from a failed/discontinued/upgraded home boulder cave.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
Hi
Things are happening in JHB, there are currently 2 active commercial gyms, the SA Climbing Academy and Wonderwall. Then Wits University is in the process of building an awesome huge comp wall, the project is already approved by Wits, and to my knowledge the MCSA JHB section have put intention to contribute large portion of the funds. Then David Wade is thinking of expanding his wall in Benoni and making it commercial. Then there are lots of private bouldering walls around such as Peter Laz's wall and Ken's wall. JHB is by far the city in SA which has the most walls and opportunities to indoor train.
Despite this number of wall the SA Climbing Academy is going very well, we have over 50 kids who we coach in the afternoons and in the evenings we are full.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
Thanks for the info on the new gyms.
What do people think about an outdoor climbing wall? (Yes I know the weather etc and on bad days I can't operate but in general Jhb has good weather)
Maybe Justin can do a poll for us at the top of this thread where people can vote on which area they want to see a new climbing wall.
Thanks

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
If they can do it in Holland, why not SA?
http://www.bjoeks.nl/index
Although it may well work out more expensive due to foundations, construction costs, security, weatherproofing etc.
Buiding one in an industrial unit may be cheaper.

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
I think the outdoor idea would be great.
Maybe a wall that can rotate on it's base so it can be in or out the sun?
Next to it a restaurants and chill lounge with a gear shop?
Anyone know of a good piece of land of venue, please let me know
Thanks

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
in my opinion, SA climbers climb rock when the weather is great. you will be making your money during rainy weekends (if your wall is indoors)
Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
Outdoor wall is nice, when the weather is good, but not so cool in bad weather.
By bad weather I dont just mean rain. Cold winter winds make those crimps painfull

Re: Climbing Gym 4 Sale
Seriously? I think if you are genuinely considering this you should get your finger out and start doing some of your own research.GarethX wrote:Anyone know of a good piece of land of venue, please let me know
