Kloofing in Magaliesburg

Postby joen » Mon Apr 02, 2012 10:31 am

Hi All, newbie here

I have been going up the gorge at Bergheim (Think its called Fernkloof) for ages now, but I need a new challenge, I know there quite a few gorges along the range there, but the information I can find is limited.

Is there any information on gorges, access, difficulty etc on any gorges along the magalies ridge, I am not a climber so It would be great to access the top of the ridge without equipment

Ideally a campsite would great close to the gorge.

Hey Joen,

The MCSA, both Jhb and Magalies sections, own various pieces of land with some of the best kloofing! Tonquani, Grootkloof and Mhlabatini are 3 of the best I know of.

Contact Uschi on 0118071310 (Jhb section) or Kari (Magalies section) on 0878083729 both between 8am-10am weekdays.
You'll need to get permits @ R35 per adult. There are entrance fees if you go through commercial campsites such as Mountain Sanctuary Park (to get to Tonquani).

The MCSA sections should be able to give you all the necessary details, maps etc. It is well worth the small cost!

There have been a number of recent armed muggings at Grootkloof and Tonquani. I certainly won't be going there any time soon! Search the forums for reports.
