Bouldering other good areas?

Postby Danimal » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:21 pm

Just a question, we are heading to SA from Canada for two months and are planning on spending most of our time in Rocklands. Just wondering if it is worth the trip up to Joburg. Is there any good bouldering or route climbing up there? Are there any other areas that people would highly reccommend that have boulders/projects in the V10/V13 range or routes/projects in the 5.14 range??? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thx

Montagu (quarzitic sandstone) and
Oudtshoorn (limestone)
both are well developed route climbing areas in the western cape...

Other good bouldering areas

Bouldering wise, there is very little in Johannesburg.

The \"Topside\" bouldering area (20 minutes drive from Cape Town city) is awesome and worth a visit. There are currently approx 700 problems up to grade Font 8B and a number of hard projects. Guide books are out of print unfortunately, so it would be advisable to tag along with one of the locals if you're keen to go (the boulders tend to be widely distributed and sometime difficult to find). You're welcome to contact me when you're in town and I can point you in the right direction - my email address is evan.wiercx@bouldering.co.za.

Check out http://www.bouldering.co.za ... my site has many Topside bouldering pictures to whet your appetite. There is also a Bulletin Board dedicated exclusively to bouldering.

Cheers,

Evan.

If you only in SA for two month give Joberg a miss!
For bouldering stick to Rocklands, it's where it's at! What time of year are you coming? June to August is best! The Stellies crew will represent! Topside if you are in CT and have time to spare? Rains alot though during that time.
For routes go the Montagu, the Pipeline has some doable lines, maybe? And is a good option if it rains in Rocklands.

Check out the GROOT WINTERHOE WILDERNESS AREA(near porterville, en-route to the landz). This place is an undeveloped Rocklands for sure, we explored there a bit over the weekend and it is mindblowing in terms of quality and quantity. get out there you lazy fools! :D
