Grootkloof - unknown route

Post by Hector » Fri Jan 20, 2006 1:20 pm

Does anyone know if there's a route going up the middle of the appealing face about 15m left of Dive Bomber. That would be about 5m right of the prominent corner and crack of Running Out of Luck (i.e. directly opposite the base of the descent gulley). The route guide lists a climb called Absolute Beginners in this area (grade 24) but there is no description. The climb would start up some roots, then head straight up vague cracks to the big ledge.

If there is route there of that grade, chances are that Kevin Smith or Stewart Middlemas either opened it or knew of it. Try them or Mike Hislop (he lives in CT these days - I think)

I tried the route yesterday. It felt about 24ish and is very cool. Gear's good and the climbing's bold (tested a few pieces with some big airtime). Make sure you clean the exit really well though, as its currently full of dead bushes, which made it the crux!
