Higgovale Quarry safety?

Postby Alex69 » Mon Apr 11, 2011 5:05 pm

Hi guys,

My lady friend and I have moved down to CPT and live very near the quarry. Just wanted to see if people climb there often? Walked there the other day and the gate was locked (I mean you can just jump the fence etc). Also felt super isolated and dodgy. I would really like to train there after work etc.

Please Let me know.

yeah its pretty safe! except for the tree's coming down every once in a while. A lot of people climb there all the time, the routes are pretty easy and short. Though lots of fun, i still go there. i read up about the access issue and so far its fine to be there as long as you dont shoot a movie.
Have fun Jacques

Isolated???

Your about three minutes from the road, i feel more isolated at a mall

I climb there during the week, just hop over the gate its there to keep unwanted people out like paint ballers and odd circus folk on mono cycles. (saw a couple there the other day)

It would be worth doing a quick perusal over this post relating to the Quarry: Higgovale Quarry there is a letter there stating that you do not need a permit to be in the quarry (just in case you get challenged by a Parks Official).

Hi Alex69

ARF (2 years ago) replaced the bolts with proper glue ins on the mainwall only.
The place sees a lot of traffic nowadays and there have been no incidents(muggings) since the gate has been locked and generally more people frequent it.
Check out this site for the RD. Some very nice ''after work'' routes.
In summer if you are looking for a quick morning burn on the weekends the mainwall is in complete shade til about 1pm.
Neil Mostert has since bolted some really HARD routes graded about 25 and 28.
There is also a very testy 24 on the mainwall which still has old bolts, but you can use the top anchors on the 19 to toprope the 24 before you lead it. It is thin & hard.
The ''Nefarious Crack'' is a classic, once you have it dialled on sport you can lead it on trad, it takes very good gear until you get to the horizontal rail at the top.....try it, super exciting, safe and fun :thumright

I still wana go check out that left wall again.
It seems like a very nice place to introduce people to climbing.

funny that all the routes have the same name :D

Climbed there a number of times recently and also after dark on a few occasions never had a problem or even see any homeless dudes there.

I felt pretty safe. Enjoy! ;)
