The Swan

This is a superb new route on the main wall at Tafelberg, Cederberg. That wall keeps yielding fantastic climbing.
Gosia onsighted pitch 1 last year in impressive style, we found a pitch 2 but couldn't free it and a lightning bolt hitting the crag at the start of pitch 3 gave us the required excuse to run away.
I returned a few weeks ago with a handy Douw Steyn who waltzed the first 2 pitches (23,24), and very patiently held the heavy rope while i hung on pitch 3 (23). Douw dispatched the final 2 pitches (20,21) whose line flowed perfectly from the end of pitch 3.

avid trad climber Andrew Pedley did the 2nd ascent of the route next day with Mark Seuring. pedley could just about remember how to place gear having done his last trad route in 2003.

i went up again with Dave Birkett and Mary Jenner this weekend.

Anyway - just explaining the mishmash of people in the pics.

everyone gave the route 5 stars.

Adam what you are doing is making my heart sing. It's so cool and inspiring when you or anybody raises the bar and blasts new free routes in fine style. The pics are awesome!

The trick now is to entice some of the young rock jocks with an average age of less than 40 to belittle these routes by making them look easy which I am sure we do not.

Totally stocked. You do what you can at Tafelberg and I shall crusade on at Yellowwood if I can find anyone to go up there with me. Any takers tomorrow or Friday....

Yeah well, I can't climb Dog of Thunder either....

But it would not be there but for me....

Conceiving the route and getting it climbed is what matters and then it is there for all. Movie makers don't hold the camera...

Builders don't lay the bricks...
