Gate at Higgovale

Postby Bubbles » Wed Dec 17, 2008 7:30 pm

Hi All,

Any one know what the deal is with the locked gate at Higgovale Quary?
Does any one know why it is there or who put it there?
How does one get access (other than abseiling into the quary) who has the key?

any info would be helpfull.

I just noticed it tonight as well. I also spoke to people who were walking dogs up there and lived in the area, but they didn't seem to know anything about the gate. Someone did tell me that it wasn't up yesterday, though.

I climbed there on Tuesday the 16th Dec and there was no gate up. Dead quiet too.
I gotta tell you that on the really easy warm up climb on the far left, the one very obvious jug is LOOSE.
It's only a matter of time before it pops...

Hi All

I made a few phone calls to SANParks.

I spoke a gentleman named Hilton who’s section manages the Higgovalle quarry. The gate has been put in place by SANParks as part of an incentive to keep the muggers and drug dealers out. :)

He said that there should not be any access problems with regards to hikers, climbers, etc. :D

They are in the process of making up more keys that can be issued similar to the arrangement that is in effect at Skoorsteenkop and Newlands.

He said that anyone wishing to query getting access to the Higgovalle quarry can give him a call on 021 422-1601.

Regards
