Nope, Guy and co. applied through the proper channels, so it's a fully legal crag.

Who is Guy Holwill

Postby Justin » Wed May 02, 2007 3:55 pm

Guy basically got Sport climbing established in SA. I don't know how many routes he's bolted but it's many, many and many of them are classics (page through a Cape guidebook and count how many times you spot his name).

It must be noted that Guy did in fact once upon a time in fact Trad climb, but seems to boulder mostly these days.

See http://www.bouldering.co.za/profiles.htm for a profile (there's even a pic :)

Climbing is also a business, just like other professional sports.

I don't mind if it is business

Postby Drifter » Wed May 02, 2007 5:15 pm

Just as long as people are honest about it. We don't try to pretend what we do is not a business so it would be appreciated if professional sports people and those who write books don't try to pretend what they do is not a business.

If you are going to pay money to watch a businessman play rugby you should pay money to watch your plumber do plumbing.

Drifter, bolters are not paid to bolt(in SA). Most bolt for love of climbing. & it costs them atleast R22 per bolt just for hardware. Petrol, samies & gear are not free. Most guide writers would make more money if they spent the same hundreds of hours taken to write a guide, packing bags at Shoprite.

Climbing for 99.9% of climbers is for fun. How many climbers in SA get R50000 a month for climbing?...zero. Are there any profesional climbers in SA who get R10000 a month for climbing? Are there any profesional climbers in SA? Rugby, cricket & soccer players in SA who get R50000 a month to lose games...more than 1000(including officials to help coc k it up)

Last I knew Guy was a CA with one of the big accounting firms.

Drifter stick to stupid questions, your statements are more stupid.

I had too much caffine yesterday afternoon. I had a conspiracy theory that we always seem to hear about the same top climbers because they are marketing stuff for the industry ie wearing certain brands of climbing shoes etc, I mean it is a business in that way which I don't think there is anything wrong with, though. Does the climbing media market certain brands over other brands through top climbers?

Should it really be necessary to answer this question?
Have you ever seen pics of Justin climbing in an Armani suit?

Reason we hear about the same top climbers: they spend less time on the fourm & more time actuly climbing.

Drifter,

For what its worth, some free advice:

 Forum Posting 101

DO NOT make your name arse (of soos julle se in die kaap \"maak jto naam gat\") by posting rubbish because eventually people will ignore you.

This isnt your own private blog where you can post before you think, here you need to think before you post...use it, lose it.
