Rope length required for Spitz

Postby henkg » Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:26 pm

Spitz guidebook recommends 60m.
We have set our sights on Abrasion and SW Wall route.
Will I get by with 50m on these?

To each his own: we climbed with a 60 & 70m pair, but single lining the routes. did we need it? well we were three and it was lekker not to have to worry, plus we got to link pitches. also its granite, and so you don't often need two half ropes. what you could do is carry a 60m half rope for abbing and lead on a beefier 60 or 70. if you read the new guide you will see that there are pitches up to 65m long on Spitz.

my only major suggestion for Spitz is bring a comfortable pair of shoes and remember that you are largely smearing, so your down-turned toe will not like the place. suffering i climbed as much as possble in my approach shoes.

if you haven't been there please prepare for some manly bolting, and great reluctance for "X' and "R" usage in the guide.

Thanks Kevin. I see you had a great time : http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-en ... /tpod.html

2 50m half ropes and a 70m Joker in my possesion. 70m is heavy and awkward on shorter pitches. Then again a retreat with the 70m may save my bacon.
