Cederberg New Sport Routes

Postby Andy Davies » Wed Jul 06, 2005 12:40 pm

The MCSA has been trying to get permission to equip routes at Rocklands since 1993 so its with great pleasure that I can announce that Cape Nature has agreed with our proposed Cederberg Sportclimbing Management Plan. What does this mean to you as a climber? Firstly we will be able to equip new sport routes in Rocklands and Truitjieskraal and of course for the rest of us we will be able to enjoy these new routes. The management plan will also ensure protection of this fragile environment by means of a simple new routes review process. This will be achieved by limiting the numbers of new routes, unsightly over bolting, and an unstructured path system to the various crags.

The new routes review process is being finalised but will essentially consist of the following:

1) ) Climber sends electronic application to MCSA that includes:
a) close-up photo with line
b) panoramic to show area
c) GPS - preferable
d) Checklist ie (camo hangers? good bolts? lower offs? bushmen paintings? toproped route? path? base?)

2) A Subcom of climbers review the application and issue permits to bolt which equipper must have on person when they are bolting. This subcom will consist of Adele McCann, Guy Holwill and Jayson Orton.

So moral of the story is: get out, toprope some sweet lines and lets see some great new routes!
