Sands of Time - SPEED RECORD

Postby BoNeZZ » Wed Mar 06, 2013 8:49 pm

Awe!

So today me and my boy sKuLL did a speed accent of this great route, we did it ALL CLEAN, (no French free) in 24' 14''. That was from first man off the ground till last man touched the small boulders on the summit. Anyone else out there done it, know anyone who has done it faster? (this was our second attempt, so yea hopefully coming in hotter in the near future)
Any one THINK they can go faster?

Lets get the speed train rolling!!

ps: not trolling
PEACE out :pirat:

We did the REALLY easy 10 pitch Fun for Children on gladde rots, Paarl in 34 minutes 54 seconds simuclimbing using 21 draws, soloing most of the pitches. Fun day of crawling :). You can run a lot of pitches  . Give it a go.

Perhaps if you had a 80m rope you could lead pitches 2, 3 and 4 in one go and not have to bugger around at belay stations ;)
You certainly could do pitch 2 and 3 on a 60m rope...This sounds interesting :P

Not familiar with any rock climbing speed records - but the way records come into existence is that someone goes out to do something fast, gets word out on climbing forums, maybe try to get something into a publication and if the record is worth its while people will take a shot at it. The only SA mountain speed records I am aware of are:
- Highest point in each province (4 days 18 hours - they beat me to it  I wanted to do it this year in 5 days 18 hours but it got broken in December 2012)
- Mafadi (SA's highest point) which was set a few weeks back by a trail runner in just under 10 hours (my attempt to get the record from 27 hours to 18 hours failed in bad weather last year) - thats hang of a tough hike to do in 10 hours
- A Grand Traverse of the Drakensberg has been done in 62 odd hours

There would probably be others, but I don't know them...

BoneZZ and sKuLL are you guys for real? Pirate invasion :pirat:

i doubt that there has been any focus on trying to set up a speed record on SoT. I would not want to run it out on the traverse pitch, take some air time and get to know the Grey Death more intimately. kNee cAppeD. your time is pretty impressive but prepare to be humbled if some of the old codgers get in on the act  i guess it could be soloed in under 10mins.

i once overheard robert saying that hilton davies climbed jono gordon's route (grade 22 and just shy of 30m) at Silvermine main in 1min20s. to appreciate how fast that is you need to try and do it.

So it is Friday and it is raining.

Thus I would like to make a contribution to this topic:

I will sponsor a case of beer or a bottle of Jack Daniels.
Actually. I will sponsor both:

For the fastest TRAD assent of Sands of Time during 2013.

TRAD ascent...sheesh, that's going to be rather run out!
What like 3 pieces of gear on pitch 2 and almost nothing anywhere else? :P
Or am I just being noob-like? :thumright

Oh - and of course some crazy person did the Column at Didima from Cathedral Peak Hotel to the summit in 3 hours! I don't know how that's even possible. The approach is 6km including really overgrown terrain near the base, and the climb is basically unprotected and very exposed. I guess not being able to place gear probably helped with speed :eye:

The Nose (+3000ft !!) has been whittled down to, what, like 2:24 or something silly - and we are concerned with...??
Really?

But seeing as cases of beer are being given away....

@Johann, this 'trad ascent'...does this require actually placing gear and being belayed (seems pointless :-) )

@Jonathan
The Column time was Mike Cartwright and Fran Hunzicker. I read 'hotel' but it may have been 'hut'
Is the Mafadi 'record' round trip (I.E. car-to-car)?
Are you putting any beer on that being beaten? I accept Cider / Bourbon or (good) Tequila. Double it if I do it car-to-car? :-)

For the rest out there interested in more meaningful objectives:
To my Knowledge, Oceans has not been done car-to-car in a day
Alard et al do JHB / Blouberg in 24hrs (yes a ROUTE on BB), the challenge would be upping the route done
Cartwright did Sentinel | Mpunjwana | Column in 3 days, walking! Beat that
Hector and Andrew's Lionheart traverse needs to be attempted, that's pretty cool

A few years back Al, Marky S and Douard had a week in the Cape. They had a pretty big ticklist but got distracted by the beach :jocolor:
This can be done, I tried once but got scared (it happens :-) ):
Reneisance / Exposure / Armageddon / Oceans / Wall of Silence / Klein Winterhoek Frontal....

...in 7 days...

It CAN be done...I put a bottle of fine Tequila on it (now that Joe is abroad lol

Yo!

Just interested in the free ascent record at the moment...
But trad it, solo it or use the bolts as pro, what ever tickles your fancy, as long as its free and you aren't pulling on gear.
:thumright

Don't have a rack, but that case of beers and bottle of Jack for the fastest trad ascent is looking awfully temping...reckon that third and fourth pitch would be quite hairy haha...:pirat:

**Feel free to post ascent times if there are any**

Hann, does the "trad ascent" allow one to clip into the bolted anchors?

The Mafadi speed record is car to car - no wheeled objects allowed after the car, so don't think about a bicycle...

I think Bobby's 3 peaks is probably the most impressive by a long shot.

Julian Boulle ( wingsuit fame ) and I did Private Universe in day from my house in Cape Town. Including walking off down the back to Bains Kloof and hitchhiking back to the car at the farm and then driving home. ( lucky hike )

Bobby also soloed Exposure in F and was back in Cape Town by 11am.
ADK did Comes and Time and Frontal on Klein Winterhoek in a day with the use of a paraglider.
Once summited Yellowwood by 9am after soloing Smalblaar
Jacobs can be soloed in 8 minutes

I reckon Sands of Time would take someone speedy less time than Jacobs.... I am a shade lazy but Jimbo is going through a heroic phase from what I read...

Hello Hann

This morning (29th Dec 2013) Guy Paterson-Jones and I were thwarted by huge crowds on Table Mountain so we had a whirl at a bit of speed on Sands of Time. We did a few ascents to get a bit dialled then tried to be quick.

We know your generous offer has a couple more days to run and there may be much better times still to come in - but can we get our submission in to you?

bests,
Hilton and Guy

Hilton,

Sure, you can submit.....

Be reminded: my offer is for trad ascents only.

Care to comment on the pro you used?
So us lesser mortals can regale your accomplishment around campfires.

Can I make yet another plea for anyone with a copy of the video that was made of this awesome accomplishment? It was filmed by Moose no less. It must be out there somewhere?
