Ideal Length for a Static Rope?

Postby Mecnic » Mon Aug 15, 2011 8:57 am

I have a new and unused 100m Beal Intervention Static and I was wondering what lengths would be ideal, I have considered the following:

1) Leave it 100m
2) Have it cut down to 60m and 40m then I have 2 Ropes of different lengths
3) Have it cut down the middle 50m 50m

You opinions and input will be greatly appreciated

It really depends on what you will be doing with the rope...
I cut mine 60/40 and have mostly used the 40 meter rope for abseiling.

100 I find is too heavy to carry and a mission to coil.

Further.. the 60 meter rope is useful because it allows you to to get down (off 30 meter long routes) if you were taking photographs of someone climbing.

Thanks for the replys I was also considering the 60 40 approach as the 100m is heavy and my dynamic is 60m anyway.

Surely it all depends on what you bought/got the rope for?

I got the rope for several reasons

I was given such a good price if i took the remaining 100m on the roll, so I took it

I basically want to build top anchors to abseil from and then of course use it as an abseil rope, I have a full sports rack so this rope is more an accessory and to abseil down (if there is top access) for photos or to check anchors bolt conditions before trusting your life to them. etc

So if you never intend abseiling down more than a single pitch sport route, then 60/40 (or maybe 70/30 to leave a bit for rigging?) should be fine.
