Can I wash my climbing shoes ?

Post by KingDweezil » Wed Jun 23, 2010 2:06 pm

Mad Rock Evolv is the brand I've been using. 2 years old now , couple of rock climbs and a gazillion LC de Villiers (MCSA inspired) climbs with me shoes.

Kinda stinky now - could and if so how can I wash them ? Yeah I know sport climbing doesn't require nice smelling climbing shoes

have a good week and weekend onwards - Ngithi woza woza Friday my darling 8)

I drop mine into my top loader every so often.
Usually with Skip liquid.
The leather and the synthetic types.

Usually find the rubber a little more sticky after a good spin cycle.

Really, I do.

Don't find it does much for the smell though :drunken: .
Even if I pour the skip directly INTO the shoe....

I've found the best to get rid of the smell is to first hand wash them (I've had a couple shoes start delaminating around the toe-rand from excessive machine washing) with your normal laundry detergent. I then rinse them about 3 or four times and with the second last rinse I leave them to soak for an hour or so in a vinegar/water solution (maybe half a cup white vinegar to five litres). Vinegar helps kill some of the bacteria that makes them stink. Bicarb of soda would probably work as well I think but I've never tried it.

That keeps them less stinky for a few weeks. But once your shoes stink they'll always stink.

Peace and blessings
