HELP - Advice needed re rain jacket

Postby wravenant » Tue Apr 01, 2014 7:42 am

I need to buy a good quality rain jacket, and I can not decide.

In short it needs to handle:
• Trail running (mostly long distance)
• Rock climbing
• General use
• Be packable
• Be light
• Have pockets
• Have hood
• Not break the bank

My current short list:
• Mountain Equiptment (http://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/lattice-jacket)
• Berghaus Velum II (http://store.berghaus.com/p/mens/mens-v ... ket/420655)
• Berghaus Octane Stretch (http://store.berghaus.com/p/waterproof- ... ket/421164)

Any help, advice, suggestions would be welcome, especially if anyone owns any of the above jackets or brands. Other jacket suggestions also welcome.

Thanks in advance.

All of the jackets listed seem to be hard shells -- are you absolutely sure this is what you want? In my experience, "waterproof" and "breathable" typically do not go in the same sentence, although many manufacturers try to advertise their hard shells as such. A top of the line Gore Tex hard shell like Alpha SV is going to feel not that different from wearing a plastic bag when you have it all zipped up.

Are you sure a soft shell would not be more suitable for what you want in terms of providing partial protection from the weather? Typically if you are running, rock climbing, etc. you're going to be pretty miserable in a hard shell, or that's my experience. I spent quite a bit of cash on that Alpha SV and rarely use it.

You're right there, a softshell with a hood would be better for what you want. They generally breathe far better than hardshells and are stretchier.

Iam gonna say the other side...
A softshell is not what you want. You cannot rely on them to keep you dry while running or climbing far from anything and then they are usually more bulky than a proper hardshell.
I wanted a shell that doesnt take space or pretend to give insolation (3in1...) while being bombproof to keep me and my fleece dry in hard rain. I went for the MH Typhoon jacket, which did actually break the bank, but its super light, packable and reliable. Hi tech has some pretty good cheaper hardshells...
