Bouldering potential at Grabouw?

Post by Justin » Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:32 am

Posted on behalf of Iain:

I remember reading some time back some folks were asking about some alternative climbing venues within a reasonable radius from Somerset West.

Two weeks back I had the privilege of racing Xterra Grabouw. During the bike leg I spotted (and was a bit distracted by - hence all the blood on my shins that day...) all the bouldering potential both in and out of the forest - and mostly right next to the trails.

Take a look for yourself:

By the way the POV of class mountain biking is by 4 times Xterra world champion Conrad 'caveman' Stoltz. (No the video was not sped up in editing).

Here is a google earth image showing the parking and boulders (circled). About 3km as the crow flies from the parking.
The circled area is the one at 2:10 in the video.

About a kilometer from the Landroskop hut in the Stokoe's Pass direction (south ish) there is a cool looking wall that would be good for highball problems.
Happy climbing
