Northcliff JHB

Postby bg » Mon Feb 25, 2008 6:13 pm

HI - Does anyone climb at Northcliff still in JHB ? wanted to get some info on the location , I have seen the route guide but was wondering more about climbers safety there and the quality of the area..heard there were lots of broken bottles etc there.. A bunch of us are keen to try it out instead of stubens every week so any info will help - are the climbs shorter than strubens or about the same length? best place to park , best time of day to go ..all that jazz..thanks

Eish wena, I've been to Northcliff once and have vowed never to return to the place again. The story about the broken bottles is true!!! The route lenghts are similar to Strubens and mainly for trad. There are anchors at the top, so top roping is possible... but I will not go there again.

Howzit BG
i last climbed at northcliff about six weeks ago and used it primarily to assist in injury recovery and to rebuild strength.
the routes are similar in length to strubens as is gradiing, max's out with a 22 if im not mistaken. all routes can be done top rope but can also be sent as trad if your up to it.
there is a lot of broken glass around, but none of it is so bad that it cuts, ive even taken my 2 year old boy down with us and let him run around and he has never hurt himself, most of the glass gets washed down with heavy rains and leaves the belay platform fairly clean.
we even started collecting and carrying out glass.
there are only a handful of routes with bolts above but we even set up other routes with top anchors just for fun.
its a good place to muck around, certainly not challenging but still worth it for a change of scenery. i wouldnt climb there continuosly though cause the routes are all pretty easy, certainly on top rope.

ok thanks - 2 different opinions - so ill wait for more people to comment i guess. main question is safety , if there are no ill tempered muggers hanging around there , i might go check it out to see for myself..

Havent been there for a while, but when we went it was pretty safe, my dad dropped us off and picked us up later so the safety thing is pretty ok, it is also nice to have a change from strubens now and then

i've been to Northcliff once or twice to climb ....
the routes are ok, like others have said similar in length to Streubens.
i didn't find issues with safety (there was even a car guard at the parking), access, too much litter; and there certainly aint no broken bottles, well not on the rock anyways :)
for a quick afternoon getaway without having to drive it's great. gets nice afternoon sun too, whereas Streubens gets morning sun mostly.
