Holy Mackerel - Cool for kids

Post by johannlanz » Tue Apr 22, 2014 9:56 am

I climbed the route Holy Mackerel (for the first time ever) on Fountain Ledge with some kids over the weekend, and found it to be a fantastic route choice for them when combined with the top pitch of Cobblestone. It provided 3 fairly long, straight-up pitches of consistent, good quality, grade 14 climbing. I combined pitches in the following way (RD's according to Tony's new Cape Peninsula Select: my first pitch was pitches 1 & 2 of Holy Mackerel; my 2nd pitch was pitch 3 of Holy Mackerel; my 3rd pitch was pitch 4 of Holy Mackerel plus pitch 6 of Cobblestone. I think some of these non-classic routes get overlooked, but mixed and matched can offer equal if not better experiences than some of the classics. The kids preferred this route to Staircase. I would highly recommend it for anyone climbing this kind of grade, or wanting to take beginners out on a very pleasant TM experience.
