Kiwi in Africa

Post by ianthebean » Thu May 18, 2006 8:54 am

Ian here from New Zealand. I am flying to South Africa tomorrow for a
big trip from SA to Kenya over about 4 months. Hoping to get a good bit of
rockclimbing, hiking and whitewater paddling along the way.

The general plan is to spend 5 weeks in SA travelling in a sort-of clockwise
direction through Mpumulanga, Swaziland, Kwazulu-Natal, Durban,
Drakensburg, Lesotho then along the Garden Route to Cape Town. Then
it's on to Namibia, paddling on the Zambezi and eventually a good few
weeks at the White Nile in Uganda and finally Kenya (hopefully
climbing Mt Kenya at some stage!).

In South Africa I'm really keen to do some climbing at Waterval Boven,
Drakensburg, Montagu and definately at Cape Town. At least those are the
places I've heard about. There seems to be a lot more that I haven't. Not sure how much paddling there is in SA but would like to find out. The plan is very flexible and subject to change randomly so please feel free to make any suggestions of places to visit to see the beautiful parts of

If you are keen to go climbing or hiking or just having a couple of
beers and don't mind hanging out with a kiwi please let me know. Would be great to hear from you. I have a tent, a pair of boots, some climbing
gear (harness, draws, wires, biners etc but no rope or cams) and a
helmet and paddle. According to the grade chart I lead about 17-18ish trad and a few grades higher sport, but will happily follow you down any river. Don't worry I'm not a nut and I won't spoil your trip. Just
please don't ask me to do the haka.

Hi Mr Bean.

When you are in the Durban area, give me a shout. I can show you around the local crags and will let you bye me beer. You may be in time for some ice climbing in the drakensberg, if that is your bag.
Unfortunatly it is our dry seasom, so the rivers are low.
