Kleinmond Crags

Postby desertbob » Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:54 pm

Hi guys,

Can anybody give me directions on how to find the climbing at Kleinmond?
I was staying out in Betty's Bay over Christmas and spend a frustrating day out looking for them. Parked at Palmiet River bridge and walked up into the mountains, looking on either side, and Nada! Also drove up and down the road to Kleinmond and couldnt see anything that looked promising.
Would love to do a bit of climbing next time I´m out there. Any beta on how to find the crag?
Also, what sort of grades are out there?

Thanks alot!

B

From Bettys bay continue toward klienmont.

Just over the bridge at the palmiet river there is a parking lot on your left.

Park here. the crags are above you on the Klienmont side of the river.

The path starts in the corner of the parking lot close to the road.

I'm surprised you missed it really, do you have a guide?

Haha, no!
But I got a good walk lugging the rope and rack up some of those windy hiking paths.
What a beautiful area.
Now that I know what I´m looking for, super-keen to check it out next time I´m in the area - probably only at the end of the year, sadly :/

If you can't find the crags at Kleinmond by just going there and walking up the hill, but have to get directions from the internet, then it is best you stay indoors.

If you haven't been there before or have a RD then the start of the path is not clear. Once you are on it thought it's pretty straight forward.

Keep an eye out for schnaayks!

Regarding RD

You could go up and try the climbs easy enough to find them all up there.

But if you don't have a copy of "western cape rock" its a good investment for the future.

You won't get lost so much :)

People who get lost should really not be out there, I never get lost although I do take a lot of scenic/alternative routes, I do a lot of exploring, plenty first accents and who's to tell me that I can't take a relaxing hike with climbing gear nowhere near where I thought that I might be climbing, but never lost. I always know where I am because I am there, cant always tell you where i've been though.

You might be right, once took me 5 outings and being chased by a herd of bulls to find this rock:

All worth it to find some good routes though :)
Staying inside on the internet is for our grandchilden who wont have any places left to get lost in!
