I suspect a scam. I have not heard anything about a comp in Nigeria.
I could be wrong, I have removed the persons email address in the mean time. I'll mail this person to confirm details.

Regards,
Justin

Hi Deji,

Thanks for your reply. Apologies for the suspicion

Probably the easiest way to confirm would be is if you could please email me contact details of other countries/clubs that have been invited or that are taking part in the event.

Hi Deji,

Sounds fun, I'd love to go over to Idanre and win loads of money.

A few questions that I'm sure many people will want to ask:
What format is the climbing competition, is it lead climbing, speed climbing, top-rope, bouldering, trad climbing?
Are there already climbing routes set up there and what grades (difficulty) are they?
How many competitors in total or per country are you hoping to invite?

I'm intrigued because from the article you linked, it doesn't seem as if there much knowledge of the sport of rock climbing in Ondo.

Cheers,

Alan

Mullet: I mailed Deji (who is the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of culture and Tourism in Ondo state) your questions - he will get back to me regarding answers (he can't reply here because his account has been deactivated).

Pierre: With 1627 FB friends he must be a trustworthy person :)

I am also waiting for contact details of other clubs, etc that have been invited to the event.

Climbing Comp in Indanre Hills Nigeria.

The Indanre hills contain many huge granite cliffs and ancient settlements. The area is on the UNESCO World Heritage site short list for cultural richness. The Nigeria state of Ondo has planned and set aside a lot of money to develop the tourism in this valley. The long term goal is to produce an infrastructure and to facilitate lots of employment for the people living there. One of the projects they are promoting is to expand the rock climbing in the area. This is a small part of huge development planned, which includes Golf Courses, Hotels etc. To achieve this they are including a climbing comp during their world famous Mare Festival. This festival of the Idanre people in Ondo is a blend of sports, cultural, musical and carnival performances. The town is painted with life, colour and parties. Thousands of visitors throng the ancient settlement in the celebrations that will run from the 15th to the 18 December this year- an African Mardi Gras. (see http://allafrica.com/stories/200912180781.html for more detail).

The SANCF have been in contact with Mr Deji Falae who is the Minister of Tourism for the Ondo State, and he has formally offered 5 climbers and 2 organisers a chance to compete in this competition. They will cover the costs of the flight and accommodation. Paul Bruyere who went as the SA Youth Team coach to the IFSC Youth World Champs in Austria this year is also the chief route setter for both Youth Nationals and the NBL national final. Paul is going down before the event with an assistant, Dave Tapp, to bolt climbs and organise the comp. Although the event will be on natural rock (Granite) we will follow the rules of the IFSC (see http://www.ifsc-climbing.org) –( the world governing body in comp climbing), as closely as possible. Paul will adapt them for the local situation and everybody will be informed as to the detail on how the comp will be run at the venue. The plan is to have 4 qualifiers, 2 semi finals and one final. The winner gets US $6,000 while the first two runners up get US $4,000 and US $2,000 respectively, this is for real, the money is set aside already.

The climbers will fly out of Cape Town a day or 2 after the Cape Town Rock Masters and compete against 5 top climbers from Australia and 5 top climbers from Europe in the Indanre hills. We will keep everybody posted on the event and how our climbers are doing. Lets wish them the best of luck.
