Bouldering in January/February

Post by Jop » Thu May 12, 2005 4:03 pm

Hi there,

I'm hoping to go on a bouldering tour in S-A, but mainly in the rocklands. However, the period in which I'm able to go is january/february. Is it to hot to climb in this period, or is it hot but possible? Will it be any better in march? Furthermore, is it necessary to have your own transport? If so, is renting a car expensive?
Also, any tips about good bouldering area's are welcome.

Thnx, Jop

The locals will say, March is better, but don't let the Cape guys put you off. Rocklands is still awesome in January/February. Climb in the shade and drink lot's of water 8)

Hey Jop,
Rocklands is awseome, it will be hot but the days are long so go early in the morning and late in the afternoon. I would definately recommend your own transport. Don't need anything fancy, a simple city car will get you everywhere. Where are you from? Cars arn't that expensive to hire, especially if you have some nice pounds. Climb in the shade and drink lots of beer :o

Thnx for the info! This gives me some hope that my boulder trip can take place in january/february. I'm from the Netherlands, so no pounds, but I guess SA will still be relatively cheap compared to our euro. Any other bouldering area's I shouldn't miss, when being in SA? Is there a camp-site in the Rocklands, or some kind of lodge?

Jop, Rocklands is suprisingly climbable over that time of year, especially if you stay at higher areas like the Fortress.

There's a campsite right next to one of the main areas.
