Sports routes in Gordons Bay

Post by Daydreams » Tue Mar 09, 2010 8:26 pm

Lets say I find something to bolt above G Bay in the area up towards the pump station. I know that all of the old routes have been choped but I was thinking a little further away from the public eye. Who would one have to contact. I think there might be a couple of people interested.

Since we're on the topic(sort of), I heard that the boulder that the 'old routes' have been on is falling down slowly, or something like that. Is it true? Does that mean that the whole boulder might end up on the pass, or houses below sometime soon?
Freek kun skerrie!

ps. i have no idea who to contact - maybe the head guy at the pump station up there. Aren't that area part of the steenbras dam area?

Under correction, but:

The original routes at Surfside were all chopped by Dep. Waterworks.
It had to do with liability seeing that the routes were on their property, and public safety due to climbers parking in the public road.

Give me a shout and I'll come investigate the proposed area with you.
I also know a Dep. Waterworks employee who may be able to give some pointers about who to contact concerning permission.

Also be aware there are some trad routes up there somewhere. Best people to contact regarding these routes are John Terblanche or Clinton Martinengo.

Hey Hann. Was up there this morning. There are two areas that one could look at. The first lower section +- 15min has scope for about 5/6 routes, maybe more. The higher one, add 10mins is slightly shorter but worth a look. I have taken some pics and will post them shortly. I have been wanting to bolt something in Gordons Bay for quite a while as I live there and it would be great if the locals had crag close by.

By the way I have no bolting experience.

Gogga....I think I know that spot. Is it around the cnr from that sharp bend half way up the road? What grades are the routes?

The whole ridge above the dam is worth looking at, many interesting outcrops. Dep of water only control a small part of that land. As far as I know the rest is controlled by Municipality. Good luck with ur search!

Bump :)

So Daydreams, what happened? You contact the municipality, get permission, establish any routes?

Howzit guys, any news on this. I'm moving to G-Bay at the end of the month. Would be awesome to have some climbing closer to home. A route or two after work will be a serious stress reliever!! rather than waiting for the weekend.
Any lower grade trad routes around? Or anyone keen to go look for some?
