Climbing in Lesotho?

Post by gripit » Tue Dec 08, 2009 3:18 pm

I am going to Lesotho (Maluti) for december. They say on there website that there is climbing but have no info on it. I have look at Wiki and the only thing there is about ice climbing and sence it is summer i dont think there will be much Ice about even though that sounds like fun. So my question is does anybody have any info on climbing in Lesotho? Is it all trad? Is there a RG that one can get?

There are some sport climbs near Semonkong, contact the Semonkong Lodge. There is an interesting abseil to do at the Malutsenyane waterfall (near Semonkong) and in that area must be some great trad routes, but I think you will be doing first ascents. Once again the Lodge will provide pointers.

The roads are something else...

There is loads of rock in Lesothu, but i couldn't speak for its quality. off hand I know there is some at Malitsinyana Falls and on the shores of Katsi. i think Gerald or Gavin might know more about them, and both of these places would be Basalt climbing.

if you are keen on bouldering i have seen great looking stuff at Sehlabathebi: it is their only national park so i would be careful not to ruin it for others. wonder if NBL would ever go to a place like that...

Sorry for my spelling of these places but i am working off memory. Lesothu is actually a big place when one considers the quality of the road infrastructure making these 3 places are far apart.
