Hex traverse

Postby Daydreams » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:09 pm

Anyone out there done the Hex Traverse. I would like to start from the worcester side and am not sure of the decent at the end (ceres side). Looking at going next week so any info would be great.
Thanx.

Hi

I presume you wish to do the usual route which doesn't in fact end at Ceres. It goes from the Thomas hut to Perry refuge and then to Pells hut and then down the Waaihoek path to end up on Lorelei (I think thats the name) farm, close to Wolseley?

Once you have found Pells hut, then the descent is easy.
Happy climbing
Nic

Does anyone know how many km's it is in total, i'm quite keen to do it in a day. I know Leo Rust has done it (but he does the puffer!), anyone else tried this? as i'd like a mortals point of view! Did the witels in a day last year - was a blast so this is next on the list.

"The Hex Traverse" is from Zonklip Peak all the way to Michells Pass!
A popular segment is the mentioned Fonteintjies - Pells leg. This is very doable in a day. Not sure of km's.
A "better traverse" is to proceed from Perry over Buffelshoek and drop down to one of the farms on the Ceres side.

hey

Have done that route a couple of times, - we usually do it in three "days" - night hike up to Thomas Hut on Fri (2-4hours), one fullish day to Perry (8-10 hours), and about half a day out via Point Hi (at pells Hut)(5-6 hours). Watch out for "The gullies from Hell" after Jan du Toitskloof nek which can turn Hellish if you dont know the way - between Perry and Pells (keep in the highest walkable gullies with some scrambling involved - there are some cairns). Otherwise the stretch from Thomas Hut to Perry is pristine and highly recommended. The route down from Pells Hut is straight forward. (Doing the full route in a day would be interesting, but not impossible - knowing the route very well would help!) (PS - giving time in hours is much more valuable in the Hex than in km...)

I know a few contacts for access on Worcester side (fairy Glen) and the UCT property side so give me a shout if you need help. (Helps if you are UCTMSc or MCSA )
