New Crag at Strubens? where?

Postby bg » Mon Feb 19, 2007 12:58 pm

Hi. there is a sign at the beginning of the path leading up to strubens crag saying that there is a new sports crag in the area and also there is a map drawn onto the sign. We went looking for this crag last weekend and followed the instructions . We could not find it anywhere and walked for almost an hour looking. Does anyone know the distances maybe from \"the hole in the fence\" as stipulated on the directions or exactly where this is..maybe its a hoax? anyway your feedback will be appreciated.

When you get to the parking area you are supposed to take the Space ship to the Crag. They ask you for a password. The password is.

the Strubens II crag is to the right. You can see it from the main road. It is about 400 meters to the right and higher up. It is best to park further along. when you get to the normal parking go right and carry on about a block. park where the new houses are being built

It is fairly easy to find. Park at the end of Malachite (turn left just before the space ship). Go through gate/hole in fence. Walk straight on path for about 200m. Intersects with more defined path, Turn right and head over the hill and down. After about 150m the crag is on your left. Only about 50m off the path. If you go too far look up and you should see it. There are 10 climbs, and really good for intermediate climbers. Not sure what the grades are (does anyone know?) but they felt like between 18 and 23 and nice variety.

There is topo for the Strubens II area (link from the Home page)

Climb ZA would like to thank Andrew Pedley for letting us use his Rockaddiction topos.

Having found myself in Jhb for a few days, I popped along to the Strubens II area today. I was pleasantly surprised indeed! Hats off to Neil and co. for putting in the effort at this area and for the topo. I get the flying saucer comments now :)
