Car Camping tents: Canvas vs Nylon

Post by Hann » Tue Jul 18, 2017 9:51 am

Who has experience with both canvas and nylon tents?

Specifically the big tents in which you can stand upright.
(no. this does not mean we're going soft. it is for ease of diaper change.... :monkey:)

By the websites it seems to be compromise on basically: Cost; durability; weight

Any other thoughts?

Spot on.

Stability is the big surprise - very few of the big car camping tents are that stable in a wind. Try and Avoid 2 pole arrangements (big square dome).

I think there was a post about this before, but yes in a nutshell;

Light weight Nylon - Strength & durability are what you must look at critically. (CampMaster always seems to fail in my estimation)

Canvas - Fills half the car and is heavy. Durable - yes, Stable - not necessarily. Generally more expensive. Probably a better investment long term.
Really, its not that bad...I think it's my shoes...

You're asking the wrong forum :hapban

4x4 Community will have legitimate advice on the canvas tents.

Generally, heavy, expensive, super durable and much cooler than nylon. Tend to have a huge "sail" area and as a result suck in the wind. The big nylon tents have the same issues but are cheaper, pack smaller and are less durable and hotter.
Happy climbing
