The rise of indoor climbing walls

Thanks to DVM for sending this in :thumleft:

From the archive, 20 March 1966: Editorial: The rise of indoor climbing walls
As one of the first climbing walls is planned at Liverpool University, there is concern that artificial faces will lure climbers away from the real crags

Interesting. UCT has such a wall (but of concrete?) outside the old sport's center. I always wondered when last it was used.

WITS has a great wall like that!

Very good for trad climbing training (chimneys/ cracks) but of little appeal to the plastic grade hero's who frequent climbing walls currently. I am so amused when I go to WITS and watch people desperately compete for the overhanging climbs on the new wall.

People gravitate to what they know.
Really, its not that bad...I think it's my shoes...
