Student coming to Cape Town

Postby dmitra » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:00 pm

Hey there. I am a college student in the US and I have to study abroad. I want to go somewhere only if there is plenty of climbing. At the same time, I kinda have to go somewhere in Africa. So South Africa it is! So I was wondering if I go to Cape Town, how easy will it be for me to get to climbing if i don't have a car? How far is Rocklands? I am primarily a boulderer, but I might get into sport. Are there climbing gyms in Cape Town? Alternately, I might go to Johanessburg. Which has better climinbg closer? Thanks for your help!

you got to come to cape town. most climbers are friendly and will give you lifts to crags from time to time. when you get here join some clubs and tag along to there meets. fastest way to meet climbers.

Climbing gyms:

Cape Town - CityROCK (
Stellenbosch (40minutes drive from cape town) - PerfectWall (climbing gym situated inside a large gym) phone: 021 882 9805

I think that these gyms will probably help you the most in getting connected to the climbing sphere of Cape Town.

Best of luck

Have you given Durban much thought? There's great climbing in the greater Durban area and around the province.

You would get a bit more \"Africa\" than Cape Town would offer and not quite the warzone that Joburg presents.
