Good Routes in Elands Krans

Postby louise17 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 12:06 am

Hey.

Heading up to Elands Krans in November and wondering about good climbs?

Any suggestion would be great, average climber grade 20 or 21.

AWEH :)

download the latest Boven RDs compiled by mr pedley and pick 'em - the star gradings are pretty accurate. and for heaven's sake do not only stick to elands krans; some fantastic routes in that grade at the disciple wall (next to God No! wall), the coven and hallucigen.

some recommendations:
shout at the devil (20 - coven)
day of the triffids (19 - disciple wall) *one of the best 19s in SA!
bonar (20 - restaurant)
goodwill van die zoeloes (21 - disciple wall)
lucifer goes to the gunks (21 - coven)

enjoy!

Somebody leased Elandskrans from the Emakhazeni Local Municipality and decided not to extend it. It has been closed for 3-4 months now and the council is making decisions on what to do about its future.

There are 700+ routes around 'Boven in 3 major areas. Here is a list http://www.climb.co.za/wiki/index.php?title=Waterval_Boven

PS: Average climber? I'd say average climbers are 18-19...

It is happening at Tranquilitas. I am merely saying this because I am organising this event.

The book is out of print and I am busy with the update. If you can't find an old copy, get the online version for now.

My apologies Louise. I was referring to the Roc Rally. I was not aware of the ONE Festival.

No worries, had Alex on the phone asking about it too.

Hope I haven't stirred too much of a wind.

Everything said above is true.

I'll second Bonar and Shout at the devil as two of the best 20s at boven. And Lucifer goes to the gunk is super cool too. Really hard though at 21, not technically demanding just has some power moves to it; don't let me put you off though its totally doable at the grade and really cool.

Boven is huge if its your first time you can pretty much avoid doing anything less than a four star route for your whole trip and generally imho pick the longest routes you can find no point in doing short 2 and 3 star routes when there are mega long 5 star pump fests to be had 50 metres down stream. That festival looks interesting too, just don't stumble off the top of the restaurant or gaper buttress you could sprain something.

Seem to recall a nice concentration of routes at theat grade in the Gully on the Island too.

http://www.saclimb.co.za/mpumalanga/theisland.html

Amazonian and Face the Music being the most memorable.

Need to check on safety before wandering over there though.
