Climbing and camping ontop of the Amphitheatre

Postby Cerberus » Thu Apr 24, 2014 10:48 am

Hi all!

My friend and I want to climb the chain ladders of the Amphitheatre and camp up there for two nights next week. Would this be advisable, and what are the gear essentials? So far I've thought of the obvious stuff:

- tent
- sleeping bag
- gas cooker
- gloves
- warm jacket
- raincoat
- food (2-min noodles and a couple cans of tuna/baked beans)
- polarised sun glasses
- a pot for cooking
- water bottle(s)
- hat
- balaclava/beanie

It will only be the two of us and I was wondering if this would be safe, since I have heard that Sotho smugglers and herders have been known to attack hikers in the past.

Also, can we just boil water from the Tugela river and drink/cook in that?

We will park at Sentinel Peak Parking Lot and take it from there. I am looking for a contact number to phone so I can get an idea of the weather and some live update on the crime situation in the area.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Check out this following link to a thread on the Vertical Endeavour website, it should answer all your questions.
Word is there was a tent slashing incident just this last week.
