Keur Kloof – Montagu – Access & Bolting

11 Jun 2010 | By: Montagu Mountain Committee

Hi All,

Recently a forum member enquired about access and bolting at Keur Kloof in Montagu.

The kloof is part of the Montagu Mountain Reserve, the gate at the entrance to the kloof is locked and people wanting to go in are meant to go and obtain a key from the tourism bureau in the town.
That said… I attended a meeting that was held by the Montagu Mountain Committee yesterday and I enquired about access and bolting in the kloof.

Access:
For the time being the committee is happy for climbers to continue going under the gate and climbing in the kloof.

Bolting in the kloof:
Anyone wishing to bolt or add new bolts within Keur Kloof must please submit an application on who/how/where and what.  The reason for this is so that we can keep up to date records on where the routes are, etc.
It is also so that we can ensure that the correct protection (bolts) are put into the rock and that it is done correctly!

For the time being use the Cederberg Climbing Management Document as a guideline.

Please include the following information with your submission:

  • Name of the bolter/person opening the route
  • Number of bolts
  • Type of top anchors to be used
  • Type of bolts to be used (please use only the ARF approved 10mm 316 rolled bolts)
  • Name of Crag you are bolting at
  • Routes neighbouring the line you intend to bolt
  • Photo with the route drawn in

Applications can be sent to info@climbing.co.za

It should be noted that the Montagu Mountain Committee is very climbing friendly (with yours truly sitting on the committee).

Many thanks,
Justin Lawson
